| Cigar manufacturing in Punta Gorda began near the turn of the century,
following an 1886 fire in Key West, which was then a prime location for Cuban cigar
makers. Cigar makers wanted to move up to Florida locations close to railroad lines, and
Punta Gorda sat at the end of the Florida Southern Railway line. |

Local businessmen began making cigars here in 1890, and the first major
cigar factory began operations in 1891, continuing for ten years. The Punta Gorda Cigar
Manufacturing Co. was established in 1905 by Albert Gilchrist, a former railroad engineer
and local politician who later became Governor of Florida. His Three Monkey Five Cent
Cigars carried a logo with three monkeys who "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no
evil." The company prospered, and a new factory was built in 1913. |
| Unfortunately, the new factory burned at the end of that year in a fire
suspected to have been caused by a worker who carelessly discarded a lit cigar at the end
of the work day. The company reorganized the next year, and cigar production in Punta
Gorda continued until the 1930s. |
